The Executive Director of C.A.S.A. (Court Appointed Special Advocates), Cathie Lancaster spoke about the impact CASA has on kids in Merced County.  CASA currently serves about 150 of the approximate 600 kids in Merced County in Foster Care.  Volunteers and trained and the serve as advocates for these kids in the absence of their parents.

It is a commitment to become a CASA volunteer advocate.  30 hours of classroom training, five hours of courtroom observation and the commitment of 18 months assisting kids.

However the benefit to kids is very positive.  Fewer drop out of high school, fewer will be unemployed and fewer will become incarcerated.  Its a big win for the kids and for the volunteers who help make their loves a little better.

Quite a it of excitement was exhibited both during and after the meeting because of our presenter, Heather Marquez, from Junior Achievement (JA).  Heather got us involved with the curriculum JA has developed for schools teaching kids Financial Literacy and Capability.

JA trains volunteers to share their experience with young people to better understand how money works.  Their program aligns with National Standards and address grades K-12.  It is clear that JA has had an impact on students knowledge and are better prepared to address their finances as adults.

You never know, this could be a great project between Rotary, Rotaract and Interact.  Lots of members provided lots of questions on potential involvement.

For more information visit the JA web site.
