President Mike Altomare opened the meeting.  Following the opening, announcements were made.

  • Sunrise is in search of a Treasurer.  Please contact Mike Altomare if you’re interested.

 

  • The Foundation Dinner is November 18th. To be held at the McHenry Event Center/The Seasons, in Modesto.

 

  • November 3rd will be the first Vocational Tour of the year.  It will be a tour of the UC Merced 2020 site.  Attendees must wear boots.

 

  • Sign up to volunteer for the Field of Honor – Members must volunteer for at least 6 hours.  Sign up here

 

  • Sunrise Rotary Board meeting on November 14th at Theresa’s house

 

  • Clothes for Kids will be December 2​​

Program

Mayor Mike Murphy visited Sunrise Rotary to give an update on the City of Merced.

 

  • The Altamont Corridor Express (ACE) rail is expanding services to Stanislaus and Merced Counties.  There will be a stop in downtown Merced and will go to San Jose. ACE is expected to extend to Ceres by no later than 2023.

 

  • El Capitan hotel has been purchased by Joie de Vivre and will undergo remodeling to become a modern boutique hotel.

 

  • Downtown Merced will be enhanced by new businesses such as a candy store, Philly cheese steak restaurant and coffee shop.

 

  • Housing developments are being added via 10 subdivisions and 1,000 apartment units between now and 2020.

Program

Stephanie Butticci was officially welcomed as a member of Merced Sunrise Rotary

Anita Richards, who is a Gold Star Mom started Run for the Fallen nine years ago to honor her son SSG Frank Gasper who was killed while deployed to Iraq.  Run for the fallen has been a way to grieve, not only for Anita and her family, but for the run participants as well.

 

The community has really supported the run in volunteering to make crosses, a banner to honor the Merced County fallen Service Members and through donations.
 

The next Run for the Fallen event is scheduled for August 25, 2018.​

  • Theresa Cesar is seeking someone to lead the Homeless dinner on Thursday, October 19th. 

Program

Joe Hypes from Playhouse Merced spoke about the different programs and shows that are offered throughout the year.  Playhouse Merced has been in existence and involved in the community for 25 years. The Young Artists Conservatory is for children 5-18 years old. It is a blended learning style in multiple-skill classes to create all-around better artists, more creative thinkers and more confident performers. 

 

The Play Anywhere program works with children at schools for 2 weeks, they have fun and put on a show at the end of the program.  Playhouse Merced also works with college students to present their research or deliver speeches in front of people. The staff of Playhouse Merced likes to get out into the community and help people with public speaking.

Program

District Governor Ray Caparros visited Merced Sunrise Rotary and discussed the importance in increasing membership. He gave his story regarding how he found his local Rotary group and how he was “welcomed” into the club.  It is important to invite our neighbors and fellow community members to our club to learn about Merced Sunrise Rotary.
