President Mike Altamore opened the meeting.  Following the opening, announcements were made.

 

Announcements:

 

  • There will be a Field of Honor meeting on August 28th at 6:00pm at Nancy’s house

 

  • Tanya has created a Facebook page for our club. Please “like” the Facebook page and submit information you’d like to be posted to Tanya.

 

  • Bob Casey is the chair of the Merced Sunrise Rotary Tree Grove and is looking for people who are interested in being a part of the committee as well as planning 100 trees.

 

  • Pope is accepting program suggestions for meetings throughout the year

 

Program

 

We had a full schedule with two groups of speakers from Merced High School (MHS).  FFA officers Katie, Isaac and Jared gave an update on what their MHS FFA club is doing this calendar year.  Students meet monthly and encourage leadership as well as the importance of working together as a team.  Community service is done in various forms, one activity is FFA students work with 3rd graders to inform them on what FFA offers. FFA students also attend conferences to learn leadership and development skills to apply to real life.  MHS takes fifty students to the state leadership conference in which students learn about different topics.

 

FFA students have Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) in which they can do welding projects, work in greenhouses, raise and animal and learn small stuff they can do at home.  There is also classroom instruction and learning; students learn the concepts of agriculture. The MHS FFA Chapter goals are to include students, introduce agriculture, the industries, educate on careers it offers and lastly be rooted together: stand tall & proud. Go out on a limb and remember your roots.

 

Merced High School principal Kurt Kollmann and Athletic Director, Paul Hogue  discussed different initiatives Merced High School has going on at the moment. The Merced Quarterback Club is working towards fundraising to build their own stadium.  The financial need for the project is $3.5 million dollars, the stadium will be ADA compliant and will be a mixed use stadium. The new gym at Merced High School has a tentative opening date of October 1, 2017.  Paul also announced the creation of the Merced High School Athletic Foundation who’s sole purpose is to improve athletics and is also a non-profit.  The foundation is constructing a website and would like MHS athletics to be open to the community.

  • The UC Merced Venture Lab is having an Open House specifically for Rotary members.  The Rotary Open House is on August 24th 4:00 pm - 6:30pm at 1735 M Street.

Program

 

Heather Holt from the Merced Theater Foundation discussed the events the Merced Theater has had and what is coming up next on their calendar.  The theater has events such as weddings, recitals, movies, comedy shows, concerts, etc. Different movies are shown throughout the year. The Foundation would like to attract people from all areas of the Valley.

 

Volunteers are needed to take tickets, hand out programs, and be docents.  It’s a great way to see an event as well as a volunteer!

 

Upcoming events include: Steven Curtis Chapman, August 31st, , Marlon Wayans, September 9th, Thunder From Down Under, September 28th, Erths Dinosaur Zoo LIVE, October 17th and more.

Program

 

Peter Schuerman, Ph.D. Associate Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development from the UC Merced Venture Lab spoke to Sunrise Rotarians about the function of the Venture Lab and how it is about creating opportunities for people and connecting mentors with young entrepreneurs; as well as connecting companies with entrepreneurs.

 

The lab provides a network and a functional workspace with facilities that have printing capabilities, conference call availability, 3-D printing, etc. for members of the Venture Lab at no charge. Complimentary legal advice to members of the Venture Lab is also available via a partnership with UC Berkeley.

 

Peter invited us all to a Rotary Open House on August 24th at the UC Merced Venture lab located at 1735 M Street from 4:00pm – 6:30pm.

President Elect Mike Cuchna opened the meeting.  Following the opening, announcements were made.

Eric Moore, Sunrise Secretary announced the “Take your Club from GOOD to GREAT! Training will be held August 12th from 8:00am – 1:00pm  (breakfast & lunch provided) in the Riverbank Community Center.  Contact Eric for more information or to register (mercedsunrisesecretary@gmail.com).

 

Teresa Cesar is looking for volunteers to assist with the Homeless Dinner on Thursday, August 10th. Cooks should arrive at 5:00pm and servers should arrive at 6:15pm.

 

Program

 

Pope Lawrence introduced Nancy Young-Bergman and Kelli Abrescy from the University Friends Circle (UFC) as well as David Dunham, the UC Merced Director of Recreation and Athletics.

 

Nancy indicated the University Friends Circle was established in 2008 by then Chancellor Steve Kang and his wife Mia Kang. The goal for UFC is to facilitate intellectual dialogue and expose the community to cutting edge research and partnership opportunities. As well as, encourage and welcome new faculty, staff, students and their families into the greater Merced community.  Lastly, to support students and their educational careers through fundraising initiatives, providing student scholarships and awards.

 

UFC events are held monthly; at each event, Faculty, Staff and students are welcomed. UFC also fundraises for scholarships, which are awarded to students who, exhibit leadership skills, organize meaningful service to others, demonstrate active and ongoing commitment to our community and have had a significant impact in our community as a result of a key project.

 

Lastly, David spoke regarding Bobcat Athletics and would like to introduce the community to UC Merced athletic teams.  Tailgating parties will be held and the community will be invited to partake.
