Sandy from Blue Star Mom’s gave an update on what the organization has been able to do with the support of Merced Sunrise Rotary. Blue Star Mom’s were able to send 92 boxes overseas to service members in 2017. They will also be participating in Wreaths Across America during the 2018 holiday season at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Santa Nella.
Sam Traina provided information on Rotary’s history in reducing polio cases by 99.9% worldwide since the first project to vaccinate children in the Philippines in 1979. Rotarians have helped immunize more than 2.5 billion children against polio in 122 countries, for as little as $0.60, a child.

Program
Tyler Richardson from Opportunity Stanislaus visited the group to talk about the non-profit economic development organization. The focus is on four key areas: Economic Development, Workforce Readiness, Messaging and Innovation. The VOLT Institute is also part of Opportunity Stanislaus; it’s the San Joaquin Valley’s newest trade school. VOLT offers expedited, fast-paced training in high paying careers that are in demand. Initial course offerings are for Industrial Maintenance Mechanic and Career Accelerator Programs. Morning, afternoon and evening classes are available.
Lastly, Tyler also provided information about the selection criteria for Best Places to Work: Central Valley. It is a survey and awards program dedicated to identifying and recognizing the regions’ best employers and providing organizations with valuable employee feedback.
