Program:

Today we heard about the WEE (Waste to Energy Exchange Device) Global project from Leo Alvarez.  This project has the potential to address the growing concerns about waste plastic.  We can do something to remove from the waste stream plastic materials and produce energy for our use at the same time.

WEE Global was started by our own Dan Caris.  He and his team are working toward an Indiegogo campaign to raise funds that will allow a prototype to be built.  A prototype that takes waste plastic and produces energy.  Once the prototype has been built and functional, it becomes the starting point to demonstrate the potential of this effort to cities, regional waste facilitates, and other industries that produce plastic waste.  This project is one of many efforts that help remove what is considered waste and turning into something valuable, all while cleaning the environment of plastics discarded over these past many years.

We look forward to the efforts and will be seeking updates as appropriate.

Rotary International Convention

Mike had just gotten back from Atlanta with great stories.  One story is that Rotarians are leaders in their communities and work diligently to solve local problems.  Another is that only 5 cases of polio have been documented in the world so far this year.  The effort continues and it is hoped that within three years and $1.5B the world will be polio free!

Program:

Alan Arnold introduced Candice Adam-Medefine, Executive Director of Healthy House. Candice spoke of the efforts to assist individuals in need within the Merced County.  One need relates to translators for Afghanistan  refugees who speak Farsi.  Seems about displaced refugees have worked their way across the US to our county.  Candice spoke of the many services provided by Healthy House to include: professional healthcare interpreting in 15 different languages (seems Merced County is one of the top 10 ethnically diverse counties in the country), Cultural Mediation and Brokering, General Interpreting Services, Translation Services, Language Proficiency Testing, Cultural Competency and Responsiveness Analysis, Diabetics/Hypertension/Stroke Screening and Education, Partners in Healing, Homeless Connect Sponsor, Covered CA Certified Enrollment, and Late in Life Abuse Awareness.   All this was started years because of the need for Hmong cultural understanding by the medical profession.

Bernard Furlow was inducted into our organization.  Welcome aboard Bernard!

Vocational 180

Richard Schwarz was up for today's Vocational 180.  He delivered his impassioned message about Walter T Lopes, who he has known since he was a cub scout.  Seems Walter is the reason he is an architect today and guided him through any years as a second father.  Thanks for sharing, it was a wonderful story.

Program:

Alan Arnold introduced his son Roy Arnold who spoke about the Helms Hydroelectric Rotor Replacement Project.  Roy took us on a journey into the heart of a mountain where to see how and learn why the generator rotors needed replacement. Seems cracks in the rotors were detected before they catastrophically failed necessitating replacement.  The replacement took several years to complete as components needed to be brought into the facility, located over 1,000 feet underground, through a construction tunnel.   The 1,212-MW Helms Pumped Storage Facility has been in continuous operation since 1984 and the proactive repairs should insure another 30 years of continuous operation.  The Helms powerhouse is situated between the Wishon (lower) and Courtright (upper) reservoirs at about 7,000 feet of elevation 50 miles east of Fresno.
