Paul's Place - Friday, May 29th, 6:30 am



Our guest speaker Cee Lee, representing the Independent Districting Advisory Committee for the City of Merced, provided insight into what is taking place with the process of electing City Council members in the future and how we can assist the work of the Advisory Committee.  Population demographics and maps may be found on the City of Merced web site.  City Council elections will be by district throughout the City once the process is complete. City Council district representation will take effect in the November 2016 General Election 

 

Jessica Setiawan, Interact President and Sunrise Rotary Scholarship recipient, thanked us for all the support we provided throughout the year.  Jessica will be attending UC Berkeley this fall and plans to become a surgeon.  We wish Jessica the very best in her studies!

Our guest speaker at Friday, May 22nd meeting was David Silviera from Hinds Hospice.  David discussed Hind's Angel Baby Program.  Theresa Cesar did her Vocational 180.

 

John Derby was recognized for defending some members of Merced's community with an article in the Merced County Times.  Rich Miller received a letter from an anonymous source and read it to our members.  A standing ovation was given to John Derby.

 

Frank announced that Stuart's Kick Out party will be Saturday, June 27th at the Vista Ranch.  Additional information about the evening will  be shared with the members as it rises.

Guests were introduced by President Rawling.  Kyle, Steve, Frank, and Theresa give insight into events.  UC Merced Graduation this Saturday and Sunday, Merced Sunrise - Giants Baseball Game - July 11th, Merced Sunrise - Special Olympics Track & Field Event - May 9th with 75 Rotarians cheering the contestants on, Merced Sunrise - Kick-Out Party - June 27th, and Homeless Dinner - May 21st.  We learned about Galen's career in his Vocational 180!

 

Jim Andersen, Dean Career & Technical Education (CTE) at Merced College, introduced Rotarians to the current status of the CTE at Merced College.  Students now complete programs in welding and industrial/electrical areas in two or three semesters rather than two or three years.  Jim then introduced and presented Francis Bennefield as the Industrial/Electrical scholarship winner.  He then introduced Chad Russell, Merced College Welding Instructor, who presented David Wright as the welding scholarship winner.

 

Two books are now circulating among Rotarians - "The Butterfly Effect: How Your Life Matters" and "From Iron Lung to Iron Butt: Riding Polio Into History."  Check them out, both are good reads!

President Rawling started the meeting by having guests introduced and provided insight into the outcomes at the District Conference.  Steve, Tim, Frank, and Theresa reminded members and guests of functions taking place: Merced Sunrise - Junior High All Star Baseball Game and Banquet - May 8th, Merced Sunrise - Special Olympics Track & Field Event - May 9th, Merced County Rescue Center - Oasis Benefit Dinner - May 8th, Image Masters - Clothing Drive - May 11th-18th, and Merced Sunrise - Giants Baseball Game - July 11th.  Pope regaled us with his Vocational 180!

 

Theresa introduced our guest speaker Jane Wiebe and her husband Lou, both Rotarians and Past Presidents of their respective clubs.  Jane established a non-profit called "Help Is On its Way," when she became involved with helping citizens of Bosnia back in 1993.  Jane says that you never know how a random act of kindness can change the world.  Our club has supported her efforts over the years and this year is no exception.  Do a random act of kindness today!  You will benefit in ways you can not imagine.

Our guest speaker Loren Gonella was introduced and provided a very informative and thorough update of real estate in the city of Merced, Merced County, the State of California and the Nation.  The members were most appreciative of the presentation and asked a number of thoughtful questions.
